Gateway Pioneers Plastic Waste Diversion and Recycling for Trees Program

An Entrego facility does more than recycling its waste.

Fulfilling its commitment on becoming a more environment-conscious Entrego facility, Gateway started sending its plastic waste to Green Antz’s Eco Hub since October 2021. Their plastic waste that would otherwise have ended up in a landfill or incinerator will now be shredded to be used in making eco-bricks, eco pavers and eco-casts and other building materials alike.

After its diversion of plastics, Gateway then pioneered the Recycling for Trees program last December, in partnership with Smart Recycle. Under the partnership, Smart Recycle agrees to provide free transport every Saturday and sponsor a tree for every 2000 kilos of cartons they buy cater from Gateway. The location of the tree planting site will be identified soon.

As of today, through the efforts of our Gateway eco-warriors team - Sherly Sison (Associate Manager), Ellalyn Achivida (Ops Supervisor) and Francisco Ojeda (Safety Officer) - the facility now qualifies for one (1) tree, contributed P9,500 back to our coffers, recycled three thousand seven hundred seventy kilos (3,770kg) of used cartons and diverted six hundred seventy-one kilos (671kg) of plastics away from landfills.

Through the Plastic Waste Diversion and Recycling for Trees project, we, from Gateway were able to dispose properly our plastic and carton wastes. This initiative doesn’t only help to restore the rejects in our facility, but also helps our Mother Nature. It also made us realize that managing waste is not that hard; and knowing that it is turned into a new useful resource is truly an accomplishment.”- Sherly Sison, Associate Manager, Gateway

Our Manila Hub also participated in the Recycling for Trees program soon after Gateway and enjoys the cost-free transport and reliability of Smart Recycle. Thank you to our Safety Officer Reiwell Pereyra!

Mindanao and Visayas Hubs also joined the Recycling for Trees Program!

What started out as a pilot project in Gateway has now spread to Mindanao and Visayas hubs through the collective action of our regional managers, associate managers and Hub OICs. MindanaoONE team fully supports this program and we will always strive to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and lend a hand to plant trees to save our future. We can’t change the past, but we can change the future! – Frances Rivera, Area Manager, Delivery Operations North Mindanao, on behalf of MindanaoONE Team

This program will officially commence in our Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro, and Koronadal hubs on 12 February 2022. Dates for the remaining 13 Mindanao hubs will follow soon.

In our Visayas Region, two (2) hubs in Cebu had already started the program with Smart Recycle last 5 February 2022. Other participating hubs in Visayas includes Tagbillaran, Iloilo and Bacolod.

Iris Baldago, Area Manager for Central Visayas who has been coordinating this program said,

"The Recycling for Trees program offers many opportunities, particularly on the environmental influences. This program gives us a chance to be part of the solution - to the increasing environmental and social concerns related to irresponsible disposal and inadequate waste collections."
